Don’t believe the hype – Server disk failures
The computer world is blighted by glossy marketing and sales promises rarely living up to the reality of the product or service you receive. At Evolve Computers we do our best to insulate our customers from this discrepancy by advising based upon our experience. Sometimes, though, despite our best efforts stuff slips through.
Take [JARGON ALERT] disk arrays for example. Simply put, if a disk fails in your server then it can be replaced without stopping the server or interrupting your business. While that may sound lovely and neat, when a disk actually fails what you discover is that there is a “20% chance” (actually quoted to me over the phone last week) that you will still lose all your data. This comes from the hardware vendor whose next-day business warranty doesn’t protect against loss of data, and who requires explicit acknowledement that you are willing to take the risk of losing all your data before they will send the engineer and parts to site.
An even bigger issue is that a particular type of ageing disk array can afford you absolutely no protection because when one disk fails the chance of a second disk failing can increase to a point where it is almost certainty.
So whether it is the hardware provider explaining that in replacing a failed drive all data will be lost, or just a fundamental flaw with the disk technology, our customer is left with their server out of action.
Then when you consider that this will be for at least 2 days, and very easily more, the importance of a disaster recovery plan takes on a new importance. A previous article briefly describes our approach to this subject and we are keen and happy to talk to any customers that want to know more.
